REFRESH: Spring Edition

6 Easy Ways To Refresh Your Home For Spring - Stilo.jpg

When it comes to changing seasons in Miami, let's face it, we don’t have them. It’s typically hot, hotter, or insanely hot. But that’s okay, we are still going to help you refresh your home for “Spring”. Not only does the occasional refresh feel fulfilling and inspiring, it allows you to refocus on the things that matter. Over time, homes become a place where you begin to accumulate unnecessary belongings. We encourage you to take a step back and reevaluate the things you need and that truly matter. Giving your home a refresh doesn’t have to be a monumental task – oftentimes it’s the small things that make the biggest impact. Here are a few simple tips to transform your home.

It’s not like we’ve been cooped up all winter – quite the opposite – but there’s still plenty of time to really enjoy the outdoors before we get into the scorching 90's. Walk outside and take inventory of the things you like and dislike about your outdoor space. Perhaps there aren't enough seats to enjoy with your guests. Maybe your yard is too dark at night and you need to add some outdoor lighting. Take the 'dislikes' and pick 3 you can easily fix. Too sunny, purchase an umbrella or change the layout/location of the seating area. You get where I am going with this.

Another approach would be to evaluate activities you like to do outdoors and think about design solutions you can incorporate to make the things you enjoy a reality. Maybe you enjoy gardening - Home Depot has plenty of material to help create a meditation garden or even a vegetable garden! Perhaps you already have a great canvas to work on but you need a functional furniture layout to entertain your guests - Crate & Barrel has sleek and affordable items that stand the test of time.

If you’re looking to invigorate your living room or bedroom, think about changing out your textiles to add new color and texture. There is no need to swap out heavy linens or bedding here in Miami. Adding some fresh color into your space through pillows and throws can be a quick and very affordable way to make your space feel new. Make sure you choose textiles in complementary tones that will work harmoniously with your existing décor. Try and use cooler temperature color tones in areas where you want to unwind and go with a warmer, brighter color scheme in areas where you wish to be productive or entertain.

You do not have to break the bank to give your art the face lift it so deserves. Swap out your old frames with some fun mixed metallic frames. You can also make small investments in good quality prints. If you want to add dimension and show your art and objects in a unique way, combine frames and objects on a floating shelf or picture ledge. Art is personal, so have fun with it and let your unique taste show on your walls! If you are unsure where to begin, CB2 has a great print gallery platform to get you started!

Nowadays, there are a plethora of options to turn any size closet into a functional one. How many times have you leaned on the door of your closet and felt overwhelmed and frustrated because you can't find anything? When tackling your closet, we have few recommendations that work for us.

- Always think in terms of shades and keep them together. Start with darker variations of colors in the back of your closet, and lighter shades colors toward the front. This allows your mind to process colors quicker.

- Ditch the plastic hangers where clothes can easily slide off and invest in some felt hangers that grip perfectly to any garment (and also take up less space). You can thank us later!

- Maybe you have too many shoes and not enough shelf space? Get yourself some clear plastic shoe bins that allow for you to clearly see what is inside and you can easily stack them in any location. If you need a place to get started, take a trip to the Container Store for all your organizational needs.

- Bins can be your best friend. Use bins for items like scarves, socks, belts, and bathing suits.

It happens to all of us. We grow tired of our old furniture pieces and assume it is time to make yet another investment in your home. Believe it or not, rearranging items or furniture in your home is a great way to give your current pieces new life without having to dish out a dime. Moving a few pieces or even just accessories from one room to another can give your entire home a lift. When you switch things up, you are shifting the energy in the space and that's exciting! Try thinking about how the space is being used and how moving the location could increase the functionality or aesthetic appeal of the space. The right arrangement of furniture can make a room feel bigger. Not everything has to be up against a wall — unless you’re really short on space. In that case, getting rid of any excess clutter or furniture can do wonders. Just the act of moving the furniture can allow for you to clean underneath difficult to reach areas, you can avoid awkward tan lines on your floor and furniture due to direct sunlight, and even extend the life of your flooring.

Plants make a house feel like a home. Introducing plants and greenery into your home is the perfect way to breathe life and energy into your space, regardless of the season. Know which direction your windows face and approximately how much light the space gets every day. Allow for that to help you determine what plants will work best in your existing space. If you feel you may not have a green thumb, try incorporating low maintenance succulents or air plants.
